Understanding departments, responsibilities and career pathways

In July, Falak Tayyeb Platinum welcomed approximately 20 students from Dubai College of Tourism as part of the Summer Career Discovery Program.

The programme was designed to help students understand how a professional organisation works from the inside—not only by looking at different career options, but by exploring the responsibilities carried by individual departments and the way those departments work together.

The programme began with an introductory workshop exploring the structure of a professional organisation and the different functions that contribute to its day-to-day operations.

Rather than focusing only on job titles, the session encouraged students to understand what actually happens behind each role. They explored how departments contribute differently to an organisation—from managing customers and operations to supporting people, communications, quality, finance, technology and other business functions.

This helped students see that choosing a career is not simply about choosing an industry. It is also about understanding the kind of responsibilities, working environment and skills that suit them.

From career exploration to practical application

After learning about departmental responsibilities, students moved into a practical activity designed to put those concepts into action.

Participants were assigned different departments and given responsibilities connected to those functions. The exercise encouraged them to think from the perspective of the department they were representing: what would that team be responsible for, what decisions would it need to make, and how would its work affect other parts of the organisation?

This moved the programme beyond career awareness and into practical application. Students experienced how different departments depend on one another and how individual responsibilities contribute to a wider organisational objective.

The activity also encouraged skills that are important across almost every career path, including communication, teamwork, responsibility, problem-solving and decision-making.

A leadership keynote with Mr. Ghanim Al Falasi

Another part of the programme was a keynote session delivered by Mr. Ghanim Al Falasi, drawing on ideas from his TEDx talk, ‘3 Tribes: Tower Builder, Entrepreneur & Momo Tribe.’

In the talk, Mr. Ghanim describes society through three different tribes—each representing a different way people contribute, build and influence the future. The idea encourages people to think beyond conventional definitions of success and consider the role they want to play in the world around them.

For the students, this created a broader conversation about careers. Career development is not simply about finding a job or choosing a department. It is also about understanding personal strengths, recognising how you want to contribute and deciding what kind of path you want to build for yourself.

The discussion complemented the earlier career exploration activity by shifting the focus from ‘What job could I do?’ to a larger question: ‘What kind of contribution do I want to make?’

Connecting education with the workplace

The Summer Career Discovery Program gave students an opportunity to connect what they learn through education with the realities of professional life.

By exploring departmental responsibilities and then taking part in a practical exercise, students could see how concepts such as teamwork, accountability and problem-solving operate inside a real organisation.

After his keynote, Mr. Ghanim Al Falasi took the students through the centre and introduced them to ideas and games he had created, including Target Pool. The demonstration gave students another practical perspective on creativity, invention and the process of turning an idea into something people can experience.

Professional success often depends on transferable skills: communicating clearly, working with others, understanding responsibility, adapting to different situations and recognising how individual work contributes to a larger goal.

Combining career exploration with practical application, a centre tour and leadership discussion helped students consider both sides of career readiness—where they may want to work and the kind of professional they want to become.

Giving students a closer look at their future

Career discovery becomes more useful when young people are given the opportunity to understand what work actually involves.

For the participating Dubai College of Tourism students, the programme provided a closer look at departmental responsibilities, different career possibilities and the relationships between teams within an organisation.

The practical activity allowed them to apply that understanding, while Mr. Ghanim Al Falasi’s keynote encouraged them to think beyond individual job titles and consider the broader contribution they want to make through their future careers.

Together, these experiences turned a career-discovery day into an opportunity for exploration, practical learning and reflection.
